Hidden Treasures Thrift Store
Today we say goodbye to a program we love: we are sorry to announce the closure of Hidden Treasures Thrift Store.
We could give you a list of reasons — economic uncertainty, donation levels, or maybe the work was simply done. But the truth is simpler than any of that: it just seemed like it was time.
It’s hard to build a program like Hidden Treasures. We were lucky.
We had Marie, Sonia, Bob, and Joe.
This family gave their time, their energy, and their goodwill to build something that helped others: lightly used goods and clothing, at little to no cost, for anyone who walked through the door. They started in a one-bay garage. Next, a small space in Sabattus. Then, finally, a home of its own in Lewiston. Step by step, this family built something amazing.
They recruited a devoted team of volunteers, without whom none of it would have been possible.
They organized Unhoused Awareness Events, pulling together organizations from across our communities to offer a meal, clothing, and resources that people might never have found on their own.
They gave away clothing and goods to families navigating hardship. Sometimes, just a t-shirt. Other times, furniture for an entire home.
They helped other organizations - clothing, puzzles, furniture, toys, whatever they could offer to help someone else's clients get by.
They never once expected thanks.
But we'll give it anyway.
To Marie, Sonia, Bob, Joe, and the rest of the family unit: thank you.
To Doris, Teri, Scott, Dave, Vickie, and everyone else who spent hours sorting donations and lugging furniture: thank you.
To our donors, our friends, our loyal shoppers: thank you.
Hidden Treasures may be ending, but what this family built - the habit of showing up for a neighbor, of giving without being asked - doesn't end with it. We will carry it forward.
The store will remain open into mid-August, with an official closing date to be announced soon. If you want to stop by and see the team, please do. If you just want to say goodbye, (or hear another joke from Bob) we'd love that too. And if you have a story about Hidden Treasures and the people who built it, we ‘d love to hear it.
